> **Short answer:**
> A YouTube outlier score compares a video with its own channel: **outlier score = the video's views ÷ the channel's typical views at the same age**. 1× is a normal video, 2× is clearly above normal and 5× or more is a breakout. Vid0 takes "typical" as the median of the channel's recent same-format uploads, each adjusted to that age.

An outlier score answers one question: **how did this video do compared with what this channel normally gets?**

A score of 1× is a perfectly normal video. 2× means it got twice the views you'd expect. 10× means something about that video (the topic, the title, the thumbnail, the timing) worked far better than usual. Those are the videos worth studying.

## Why not just sort by views?

Because views mostly measure channel size. A video with 300,000 views is a flop on a 5-million-subscriber channel and a career-changing hit on a 20,000-subscriber one. Raw views tell you who's big. Outlier scores tell you *what worked*, regardless of size, so a small channel's breakout shows up next to a big one's.

## How does Vid0 work out a channel's typical views?

From the channel's own recent uploads of the same format, each adjusted to the age of the video being scored. That baseline is the hard part of the score. Step by step:

1. Take the channel's other uploads **of the same format** (long-form is compared with long-form, Shorts with Shorts).
2. Keep the recent ones: up to 30, at least 2 days old, because the channel's current audience is the best guide.
3. **Adjust each one to the same age** as the video being scored. A video that's 3 days old can't be compared with one that's had 3 years to collect views, so every peer is rescaled along a typical views-over-time curve.
4. Take the **median** of those adjusted numbers. A median ignores the channel's own one-off hits, so a single viral video doesn't drag the baseline up.

The score is the video's views divided by that median.

Here's how that looks for a channel's own uploads:

![Vid0 latest video card: 418 views after 5 days, 13% below the channel's typical views at that age and 27th of its 50 recent uploads, with a meter from under to over, and earlier uploads scored 2.2×, 0.3× and 1.8×](https://vid0.in/blog/how-to-read-an-outlier-score/latest-video.jpg "418 views after 5 days is 13% under this channel's usual at that age (about 0.87×). Earlier uploads range from 0.3× to 2.2×.")

## What do the scores and colours mean?

Each range means something different, and Vid0 gives each one a colour:

| Score | What it means | How Vid0 shows it |
|---|---|---|
| Below 1× | Under the channel's usual | Grey |
| 1× – 2× | Normal range | Black |
| 2× – 5× | Clearly beat the usual | Green |
| 5× and up | A breakout | Orange, with a flame |

> **Heads up:**
> Very new videos don't get a score. Under 6 hours old the ratio is mostly noise, and a channel needs at least 3 comparable uploads for a baseline at all.

## What should you do with an outlier?

Treat it as a clue, not a formula. When you find one in your niche, ask:

- **Is it the topic?** If several channels had outliers on the same subject this month, the demand is real.
- **Is it the packaging?** If the topic is common but this title and thumbnail won, the framing is what to learn from.
- **Is it repeatable for you?** A breakout built on a celebrity guest is hard to copy. One built on a clear promise in the title is not.

Then turn it into an idea for your channel, and run the title through the [six-point title checklist](https://vid0.in/blog/how-to-write-youtube-titles) before you film it.

## FAQ

### What is a good outlier score on YouTube?

2× or more means a video clearly beat its channel's usual views. 5× or more is a breakout worth studying closely.

### How is an outlier score calculated?

Views divided by the channel's usual views at the same age. Vid0 takes up to 30 recent uploads of the same format that are at least 2 days old, adjusts each to the same age, and uses the median.

### Why doesn't a new video have an outlier score?

Under 6 hours old the ratio is mostly noise, so Vid0 waits. A channel also needs at least 3 comparable uploads before there's a baseline.

### Are Shorts and long-form videos compared together?

No. Shorts are compared with the channel's other Shorts, and long-form with long-form, because their views behave very differently.
